Cleaning a filter sock??

I just took out my filter sock and for the first time I'm seeing some of the little "pod" critters appearing in there. Obviously they are getting drawn into the overflow and down into the sock. Problem is that it appeared several were dead or dying, either due to being in the sock, or due to the trauma of me turning the sock inside out.

So I'm wondering if there are any tips on how to clean a sock as to not kill, but capture the little critters in there, or is that just the way it goes?

Here is a photo of the bugs I'm referring to, one in my tank. I was told they're good guys, so I hate to remove them.
