Live Rock placement
I have a Biocube 29g HQI. I put around 30lbs of LR. I had extra so I put some in the second chamber next to the media basket. Does this cause a problem? This is what the tank looks like so far. Now I have 7 snails and 7 hermit crabs...

I think it would be fine. I don't have the biocube but I have the jbj 28 and I took a bunch of rubble rock and cheato and stuffed it in the back chamber. I got the idea for turning it into a mini fuge from here so I know others do the same. And if I remember correctly I think some guys take all the bio balls out of the BC and put rock in instead. Can't comment on which is better but doing what you did shouldn't have anything but a positive affect. More surface area for your bacteria to grow.

i would definitly take out the bioballs and add some rubble rock. the bioballs over time can cause problems. the live rock will also give you more biological filtration. also i always try to keep the rocks in the display off the glass so it is easier for you to clean the glass. good luck with the new tank

I second what jg said about the rock. Once it becomes established the parts you can't use your mag scrapper on will be completely covered in coraline. I have the same problem where I put my powerheads and I have to move them once every week or two to clean or the coraline will cover every bit of the glass there.

Just to make sure you understand what JG and I were talking about.
Make sure you get one of these. Doesn't have to be the largest one they offer, but trust me this is almost as necessary as saltwater in your tank. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...fm?pcatid=4083 Once you get one make sure you can use it on all parts of your glass. Forgive me if you have one and you can use it everywhere in the tank. From the looks of your pic it looks like there are a few places in the back of your tank that you can't get to with a mag float. If you can't get to it you have to move your rock or let algae grow and trust me it will cover every bit of glass you can't scrape. Also I buy a semi abbrasive acrylic safe sponge and cut a slice about a 1/4" thick the same size as my mag float and stick it to the side mag float that cleans your glass. The little bristles on the mag float didn't cut it for me and I find the sponge sandwiched inbetween works much better. |
