huge die off
this was a few years back but we still haven't figured out what happened we woke up one morning to find a bunch of dead fish in my tank and the ones that were alive weren't doing well by the end of the day we lost every fish in the tank but here's the strange thing all our corals and inverts survived any idea what happened

that's not unusual with a sudden drop in o2
was there a power outage that night I know someone that lost most of their fish when they turned the pump off to feed and forgot to turn it back on. When they got up in the morning most of the fish were dead or dieing

Yep, Oxygen is my best guess.

The only other thing I can think besides low O2 levels like the above posters said is an outbreak of velvet. I've seen it take out a whole tank within about three days. A friend introduced an orange butterfly to her tank. No symptoms showed for about a week, then one morning she woke up and the butterfly was dead. A day or so later, a tang and some other fish died. Then shortly after the rest of the fish died. Velvet along with any other parasite would not affect the inverts in the tank.
Did you have any additions, possibly even as far back as a month before this happened?

Are there any copper valves in The system?

I had the same thing happen to me.......Brooklynella outbreak killed every fish in less than 2 days. The fish looked great that night before I went to bed and tangs were dead by morning and everything else was gone by the next morning. Nothing was wrong with any inverts and water parameters were perfect the whole time. The only fish I was able to save was a toadfish.

I don't remember adding anything but we had a guy working on our tank back then and he was stumped also it sounds like velvet would take too long we went from 100% healthy fish to every fish dying in a 12 hour timeframe and the corals were stressed

Sure sounds like a low O2 issue.

I had an O2 issue because of power outage and half my fish died in 7 hours. Especially if you run carbon dosing and have a lot of bacteria in the water that requires oxygen, it can happen quickly.

Invest in a backup pump.

Nothing else that I know of would cause a bunch of fish to suddenly die overnight like you describe except for a power outage/low O2 situation???
