rena filstar xp4 help needed

I am going to try and use a rena filstar xp4 canister filter to supplement my sump and protein skimmer. Plan to use it for chemical filtration, e.g. charcoal, phosban, etc. However, when I try to attach the flexible tubing to the intake and outflow pipes, I can't get the flex tubing 2 inches onto the hard tubing as specified in the manual. The hard tubing is barbed, and with all my might I can only get it in 1 1/4 inches. I'm afraid if I don't do the full 2 inches, and clamp it, bad things will happen sooner or later. I can still clamp it at 1 1/4 in, but will only be about 1/4 in beyond the barbed end.

Does anyone have any tips on how I can get the tubing on 2 inches? Thanks. Looks like if I can't I might have to junk this thing which was my very first purchase ( I was initially thinking of doing a freshwater set up) Thanks.

I sure do, take the flex tubing & place it in a bucket of hot tap water for about 5-10 minutes, it will become a lot more pliable for you.
