Chemi Pure Elite and Purigen

A month ago I added a media basket with Chemi Pure Elite and Purigen to my Biocube 29Gal HQI. How often should I change/replace the Chemi Pure Elite and Purigen? Also, the filter floss should I change it weekly when doing the water changes? I also have a refugium with Chaeto and LR Rubble. When I originally set up the tank I just had the Chaeto and rubble. My tank was doing very nicely and I had a large copepod population. Ever since I added the Chemi Pure Elite and Purigen media basket, my copepod population has decreased I think. They were very visible on the tank walls and now I see very few of them unless they are somewhere else. Also, does the refugium need cleaning? Thanks.

You can look at Purigen and the browner it gets the more you need to recharge it. All it takes is bleach, water, and 24 hours, then rinse in water and Prime, good to go. I don't know about the other product though.

I wouldn't leave any of these sorts of filters in place more than a month, no matter what the manufacturer claims. At that point, most will probably be coated with bacteria and be of relatively little further value, at least compared to fresh material.

Polyfilter for me , easier and shows what is being adsorbed and I change it out every month and its been around thirty years and It has never failed me in all those years,so after trying them all Polyfilter w skimming and small water changes is the way to go from my experience over the last thirty yrs. Good luck, I will stay w the proven leader.

It is so very irritating to me that manufacturers can falsely advertise their products the way they do. It seems rampant particularly in our hobby.

Thanks for the advice. It didn't sit well with me that Chemi-Pure didn't need to be replaced until four months. Is it safe then to change it every month?

Once a month seems a fine plan for changing Chemi Pure, unless it seems to be needed more often for some reason.

Been using these products for a year now. I change my purigen every 3-4 months, and the CP elite every 2 months or so. Every 2-3 water changes I will take them out, clean my media rack, and "shake out" both purigen and CP in the WC bucket (dirty). I don't use a whole CP. I use a few tablespoons at a time. FWIW, I have a BC14. I don't recharge the Purigen either. I know you can, and its not cheap, but $10 every few months is not a huge deal.

Chemi pure elite is granulated activated crbon, gfo(granulted ferric oxide) and some di resin. Carbon needs changing 1x per month or less ,imo. gfo can exhaust in days in high phosphatte water, the di resin is useless in salt water.
