4 ft vs 5 ft rimless on a 5 ft stand

hi all,

just a quick question, totally opinion based and no right or wrong answer,

I have currently got a 5x30x30 reef tank running, it has a fully inclosed hood and two MASIVE overflow boxes (11x12)inch in each corner and I despise the fact that they make my tank look like it is 19 inches wide.

so I am getting rid of the tank and hood, then am going to replace it with a rimless tank.

also keep in mind that the tank sits in a spot where it is next to a fireplace. The fireplace sticks out from the wall about 20 inches, so with the tank at 5 feet you don't have a great view of the side panel as it is almost squished up against the fireplace wall (dnt worry heat is not an issue)

first option would be to put a 5 ft rimless on the stand and be done with it.

second option would be to put a 4 ft rimless on the 5 ft stand and make a ledge to sit around the tank so I can view all the sides easily

stand is custom built and must stay

so if you can get your head around it I need to know what you think.

thanks...

yea I know but the view does bug me, or do you think this may change with a rimless tank

especially considering the overflow will be external

btw the 5 ft rimless would be 60x24x20 and the 4 ft rimless would be 48x24x24 this is simply because I will be using the cade brand of tank

I still say 5ft. I don't see the big deal of not seeing in the one side. If anything it gives you the chance to have the rocks build up around that wall without worrying about it, which can give you some interesting aquascapes

yea I really need to post up some photos of the area as the side in question is the only other side I can view other than the front when sitting on the couch. I don't really want to block it out with rocks and I would love to have the full width view.

I guess my other question is will the 4 ft look stupid on the bigger stand if I decide to go that route

I think you should stick with the dimentions you have, maybe make it a little shallower. Its gonna suck loosing width and or length. Even if this means getting a custom tank made, it would be worth the extra expense imo. Good luck!

Why not rework the overflows on your current tank. I love 30" wide tanks although I would not like the 30" of depth due to cleaning/housekeeping issues.

i think i am going to go ahead with the 5 ft,

thegrun.
i did think about doing that but with the state of the tank it is not worth my time. (chips, marks ect.ect)

robs.mark
i can get the 5ft cade tank for like $1,500 with an overlow and return. the tank is made with 15mm star-fire all round. it would cost me 3 times that to get a custom tank made. not worth the extra 3gs to gain 6inch IMO

UiU
i think you are right, i will kick myself if a get the 4 ft

thanks for your time guys and keep your eyes open for a build page in the following weeks.

”Uh,... Rip out that fireplace and go with a 8 foot!” Is the correct answer. You're welcome!

Yup, I think that fireplace needs to go. Seriously I would go with the 5 foot tank, stand is built for it and anything else is going to look out of place.

Wow looks like i finally found something in Au that is cheaper than the states. I got a custom 5x30x24 drilled with glass overflow, polished edges, with black silicone, eurobraced made fro 12mm glass for $900 usd.

I would love to pull the fireplace but unfortunately it would require 10 times the convincing that the tank took and then I would have to try and say that the 5 footer is turning into an 8 footer.... not going to happen...

I did have the rimless 15mm starfire coustom drawn up and quoted. sadly it was that reductions I thought he had accadently put his business number in the price section.

so now I have gone to a different shop that stocks the Cade tanks and drills them for marine setups I had a chat with the owner and he thinks it is a much better deal to go with the crated Cade tanks than try and get somone to make them.

so that's where I'm at, I also just went down to the local hardware store and picked up some paint, door handles new hinges ect to clean up the current stand. I am also going to divide the stand into one part wet one part electrical. I also grabbed some trimming to put around the lip of the stand considering the old tank is 60'' and the new one will be 150cm (slightly smaller by 25mm or whatever.

once I get that done I will get the new beast delivered. only thing left to think about is how to store my livestock while I'm setting up the new tank. anybody got ideas...

thanks in advance guys
