Is it a 55g sump or a 55g DT? You want to figure out how much flow you want thru the sump (like 10x per hour or whatever) and then get a pump that can do that much and more (after taking into account head loss and pipe friction). You can then control the flow back to the DY with a ball or gate valve between the pump and the DT. The other factor you need to take into account is how much water you can flow from the DT to the sump.
Example: 55g sump x 10 turns per hour is 550gph. I'd look for a pump that can do 750gph or more at a 3 ft head loss. Then your valve will need to be closed down some to control flow from the sump to the DT. This example assumes you are able to flow at least 550gph from your DT to the sump. If you can't, you can just close the valve off a little more until it's balanced. Good luck

I have an Eheim 1262 on my 120 display. Great pump. Look at the Eheim 1260 (635gph).
