i like air pumps because it oxygenates the water better. i think its better for them . Also most qts are bare bottom because treatment usually kills the rocks. put some PVC pipes in there instead

The rock and fish in the Qt tank are just temporary, something for me to play with while I'm setting up the larger tank since It's going to take me a while to buy all the equiptment.

thats not enoughˇ*salt water biofilting requires more oxygen content than that of fresh waterˇ*

I use a cheap HOB on my 10 gallon QT tank and have never had a problem. I usually have a cheap powerhead in there too, although that's more about making things exciting for the inhabitants than oxygen exchange. Although it certainly helps oxygen exchange. You'll be fine either way, but you might as well pick up a powerhead sooner rather than later. At some point you'll be QT'ing corals in there. And the fish probably wouldn't mind some more current to swim in.

I also would add either an airstone or a cheap powerhead. You can buy a cheap airstone at walmart for 4 bucks and some vinyl tubing for another 3 bucks or so.

A HOB filter on a 10 gal will work just fine.

HOB filters work perfectly on QT tanks. I would go buy a giant bag of poly fill and exchange it out each day. (It's cheap anyways) I would also run an airstone to make sure the water is well oxygenated. Water movement is good and you want to make sure you keep it clean as possible. Wipe down the walls of the tank, clean the powerhead and HOB filter as much as you can.
