Yet another TV show about tanks.....

Hi Guys.
like we dont have enough problems setting records straight yet we have another TV show (FISHTANK KINGS) on our hands..starting May 12th, its about a company that makes impossible tanks in short times.
I like to let all Newb known that TV and this hobby DO NOT mix. Please DO NOT follow anything you see on such shows on tv. Those shows are produced over time with lots of editing that you and i are not aware of.
Proper procedures of setting up a tank and cycling a tank and then stocking a tank are clearly mentioned in sticky's on our Forums.
Please i advice all new people in this hobby to take time out and read through those sticky's.
Those sticky's are there for your convenience. We/Team RC write these sticky's for new people through our personal experiences where we learned from trial and error and sometimes took great losses BUT we dont want that same for you.
Protect your investment and read and follow the stickys.
there is no short cut in this hobby.
there is no magic potions in this hobby.
there is nothing good that happens in this hobby fast.
LFS (sometimes) dont give u right advices, remember they are in their shops to make money.do ur research.

The only thing you need in this hobby is patience.
The ONLY thing that happens fast in this hobby is disaster. Save your money and time and save the livestock from going down the drain the FIRST TIME.

Please feel free to ask as many questions you feel like and remember there is no stupid question except for the one never got asked.

there's NOTHING wrong with these shows. the people that watch them and fail to further educate themselves are the real problems.

I saw a little preview for that show online, it seems awfully crazy especially after reading all RC'ers experience and the stickies. But I would LOOOOVE to visit that fish store/warehouse that they visit!!

And I'd like to take a moment to tank all you guys. It's obvious that a lot of trial and error, research, and hard work went into those stickies, and I assure you I certainly don't take them for granted!!

It's pure entertainment, and nothing else. Unfortunately, many folks won't treat it as that, and head straight to the smartpets to buy a tank, aquarium salt, and nemo.

If you really think about it, it's no different than most of the other reality shows. I watch Swamp People, but I don't head out and wrestle with the gators in the bayou (I do live in Louisiana, btw!), and I watch Storage Wars, but I'm not heading to the ATM any time soon! BUT... if I were interested in doing either of those things, I would research it first haha

I gotta check if I have natgeo... I've never seen Tanked either, although I'm curious..

I've read the episode description of Fish Tank Kings on and watched the clips that have been posted so far and can say that Fish Tank Kings is definitely more educational and better made than Tanked. You can read the episode description here
http://www.advancedaquarist.com/blog...at-geo-tv-show

They tour ORA and several public aquariums on the show. I'm looking forward to watching a tv show that shows how cool our hobby is!

There are a few cool video clips on Nat Geo's website http://video.nationalgeographic.com/...ish-tank-kings

Well they could/should have a short disclaimer at the beginning of the show, one of the guys could say something along the lines of "hey this show is for entertainment sure we make things look simple, fast and fun but the reality is that you really need to do a lot or research before thinking about getting into this complicated hobby...Don't be a fish killer!"

Something like that anyway.

However, lots of people DO. Nobody used to show up at the storage locker auctions cause who wants other people's junk. Now tons of people show up because of those shows. Don't underestimate the stupidity of the American public.

You got that right... I was talking to a guy that we bought some stuff from on craigslist. Apparently he goes to those auctions, but since that show, he says the crowds are so big and prices so high, it's not worthwhile most times.

These shows get more of a bad rap than I think they deserve. There are plenty of shows out there that are for entertainment purposes, but because some mouth breathers decide "monkey see, monkey do" the show is somehow at fault? Blame the idiots who think the show is teaching them how to do something. You don't blame the shows. I love watching tanked, and I'll probably love Fish Tank Kings too.

So stop blaming the shows. The shows are great, and they are for entertainment. And they do a good job at it.

well the sad story about such shows is that they dont show everything, its edited and taped to make it look all good. a common person seeing the tv show will get the desire to go get a tank. and when they do they will dump money in the setup and put a nemo in there the first day and then few days later you will see a thread on RC "OH MY NEMO IS DYING" or " WHATS WRONG WITH MY FISH/CORALS"
Dont we see such thread here? be honest with urself.
there is no research before buying its all impulsive and ends in disaster.

NOTE: shows are great and good entertainment BUT they guide people in impulsive sales and wrong direction.
example: one episode of TANKED shows them setting a huge tank (1000+ or so gallons) with hot water out of a tap. then cooling it down to temp with regular ice cubes from a fridge while mixing salt in it and immedietely adding fish. WILL YOU DO THAT?

This is so true. Everyday you see threads about someone who did an impulse buy and dumped all this livestock into a tank within a week.

And I dont think its so much stupidity as it is the 'American Way.' Instant gradification. People fail to educate themselves. And quite often I see it on here.

When I was young, I always saw things about reefs and how sensitive they are to changes. One reason I never wanted to try a saltwater tank.

But the people who go out and impulse buy everything are no different than backyard wrestlers that decide this is how to become a professional wrestler.

Darwinism is alive and well

I'm not blaming the shows, I'm just making an observation. But as pointed out by bnumair, some of the stuff on Tanked is just flat out wrong

And every single bit of this can be blamed squarely on the person, not a single bit of it should be blamed on the show.

No, they don't. There is this thing called taking responsibility for one's self and one's actions. Too often in today's society do people blame everyone but themselves for their own irresponsible behavior.

No, because I don't blindly follow what I see on TV, and then when it goes wrong, blame everyone but myself for blindly following what I saw on TV.

Unfortunately there are plenty that do. you and i and members at RC or other reef forums maybe the exception but i have heard a million times with my own ears " BUT THEY DID IT ON TV LIKE THIS"
and lets not gofar lets look at few newb forum on RC in last say 6 months u will see several forums that people got the idea after seeing tv to have a tank and do it all wrong then they come to RC for advice.
Such shows are misleading, people are impressionable and impulsive.

f3honda4me you dont fall in that catagory but i guarentee u millions do.
