Is this an old model or a newer model. One way to tell is how tall the body is before the neck transition, is the neck transition more flat or does it have a long neck. Is it a quick disconnect or is it one with many turns to remove? Which pump does it have. I would get the newer model not the older model, the body is too tall and the neck to flat. What size tank is this going on?

hello,
Thanks for responding, Its going on a 75 gallon tank with a 25 gallon sump. I am not sure what everything is I am going to look at it tomorrow morning. I am trying to gather as much information about them so I know whether or not I should go ahead and buy it.

How exactly can you tell the difference between a older one and a newer one?

I had one and when it worked it skimmed great but it constantly overflowed, like every week. and I had this skimmer for three years. I've also read numerous threads of people complaining about the overflowing problem. Since i changed skimmers I never have a problem with overflowing.

The biggest clue is the neck, is it long. My original skimmer was a CS8/3 or aka RS 180 the original version was very sensitive to water height in the sump and if the return pump was to go off or have a electrical outage and the skimmer and the return pump came on at the same time the skimmer would overflow. Can you link the add?

I was told not to get the one with the gen-x pump. Apparently its loud. On the link of the new one it says "modified gen-x pump" does that mean they changed it to make it better, or is that just the bad version?

This can happen to any skimmer, as the skimmer fills up faster than the sump level can go down back to normal.

As far as a skimmer, buy the right skimmer once. It ends up being more costly in the long run trying out skimmers, unless that is what you want to do.

That used skimmer's pump may go out on you, and you are then out $100, that could go towards a new, updated skimmer with a warranty.

I don't think it will fit in a 25 gallon sump. Check the footprint. You would also want to pull the pump apart and see if the needlewheel is in good condition. If it's all busted up then that is extra money that you will have to put into it.

Looking for a good ER skimmer get a CS 135 with the sedra 5000 pump, better choice for your size tank.
