Live rock in a canister filter

Has anyone ever put live rock as the only thing in their canister filter and if so what were your experiences?

Some people use rock rubble but I prefer to keep it in the display tank only... my experience is that too much detritus builds up around the rock (unless you want to clean the filter regularly). I use my canister filters for added flow and chemical filtration.
