light fixture "Designed For Freshwater Use Only"

I picked up a 40gal breeder tank today at Petsmart to use for a quarantine tank -- it was a return that I got for 50% off, so it seemed like a reasonable deal.

It came with a single lamp flourescent fixtue that is of no use to me, but on it box it says: "Designed For Freshwater Use Only"

That seemed strange to me because I don't understand how a fixture would know that it was perched above freshwater or saltwater??? Maybe many fixtures say that I just never noticed it before.

While this lame piece of junk is headed to the trash, I was just wondering if anyone knew why a light fixture would say that and what the difference might be?

Might have exposed parts that will rapidly corrode if exposed to salt spray??

Could be due to the kelvin rating of the flourescent bulb.

maybe, but it said to only put above a glass top and not have it exposed to water.

may be the reason -- lamp is a 24" "Full Spectrum" T8 which the box says is "excellent for all-purpose lamp for freshwater aquariums" -- I'm guessing it just a regular 24" tube from the shelves of HD or Lowes

Fish room well lit, no need for a light over qt... But u have a good point, no reason to be wasteful -- I'll post on the local group here and see if anyone wants it.

Good idea, I got a cheap Marineland led that's going bad on my 55, and a 36" light in the center with a couple 18" lights would help light it up.

I'd mount it under your stand for lighting of your cabinet.

"Full spectrum" basicly mimics the color of the sun at noon time. Roughly 6500K or so. Not ideal for saltwater but needed for freshwater plants.
