Pump pressure?

I have a newly acquired Poseidon PS1 return pump that is pressure rated and after plumbing it, I had to choke it off by about 80% in order to decrease the flow to around 300 gph. I asume this is because it is pressure rated so it maintains its flow better again restrictions.

My question is, am I hurting the pump by choking off that much? I plan to plumb the return so that it Ts off so that one line goes to the DT and the other back to the sump skimmer chamber and then I will leave the DT route unrestricted and I will use a ball valve on the recirculation route to adjust how much flow goes back to the sump, thus also adjusting how much goes to the DT.

Having said that, I would still like to know if choking off the flow by 80% is damaging to the pump or causing higher heat, or increased power consumption?

Thank you
