water change %?

hey guys..
not really a noob but guess it would be fitting to put it here because its kinda a noob question, but would most certainly appreciate the help.

is a 10 gallon weekly wc on a 40g breeder too much?

50-60 lbs LR and 20-25 lbs LS just some a mother GSP colony, toadstool leather, torch frag and some zinger zoas frag.. for the corals..
and 1 saddleback clown, and 1 chromis..
just wondering if im doing more harme than good with the wc's.

any help would be appreciated.

Are you having particular problems that you feel the water changes are affecting?

In general, it's difficult to do too many water changes as long as they aren't very large. Unless you have a sump, your water volume in there is likely closer to 30 - 35 gallons total, so you are changing potentially 33% each week. That's probably not necessary unless you are doing it for a specific purpose. I would think 3 - 5 gallons a week would suffice.

I do 10% a week, 20 galons in a 200 gallon system.

I do a 13 gallon water change on probably about a 35 gallon system weekly. But I don't run a protein skimmer either.

nd just decided to do a big wc because i fragged a large portion of the GSP mother colony and after fragging bunch of that coral goo [dont know what the proper name for this is] was just lingering at the surface of the water.

but if Patling does a 20g on a 200g then im prob gonna just stick with an even 5 gallon jug wc weekly.

o ya forgot to mention my filtration doesnt involve a skimmer. only 2 biowheel HOB, each running a chemipure elite bag which i will probably change at the end of every month.

I guess w/o the protein skimmer, the larger water changes will help with removing the build up of organics. But 10% weekly is pretty good even with that fact.

More importantly, what are your parameters?

I do a 10gal change on my ~39 gallon including sump every 2weeks.

Just finished watching my hometown Heat put another w up, so was busy for a bit..
But I must confess: don't have test kits.. So haven't been testing.. Salinity is 1.023 nd temp is 77 deg.. But oir her than that not really sure.. Everything is not than likely negligible.

I don't think you need to worry much about water quality, since you have lots of soft corals (filter feeders) with only two small fish. Nevertheless, a test kit is an absolute must in this hobby.

10g on a 40 is good. I have been syphoning at each WC on my nano and it's working out great. For me, the wc's without syphoning didn't do as much visually (had algae issues). By that one change, no more algae. Coincidence? Maybe, but I'll go with it!

I change about 200g per week but i dont run a skimmer ect

i have multiple fowlr systems that combined is approx 1000g of saltwater

they are heavy bio loads (puffers/triggers/tangs/L.angels)

building a 1200-1500g common sump(depending on live rock displacement and actual interior dimensions when completed) and plan to bump water changes up to 300 or 400g per week after common sump is online(may build a large/huge skimmer)
