I think chemipure elite is carbon and gfo in a bag right? So if you have adequate filtration and low phosphates, you won't need the stuff. I don't run carbon or gfo, but I think it definitely isn't junk.

I agree... I also believe its carbon and gfo. Not junk, but not always necessary.

That said, I run my own version of it in my nanos... I just buy the ingredients in bulk.

I found many favorable reviews on BRS site for this product. Many use it in conjuction with Purigen bags. I dropped both types of bags in my sponge chamber today in hopes of controlling my nitrates and phosphates. I should know in 2-3 weeks if my algae and cyano have decreased.

I have 4x6.5oz bags of ChemPure Elite and 250ml Purigen in my 140g system. That was $50 and should last about 6 months. I'll submit a follow-up report in a month.

Early report...within 24 hours the 140g tank is noticeably cleaner with ChemiPure Elite and Purigen bags. It looks like a huge water change has taken place. It has that look as if the water is simply NOT even there since it is so clear Anyhow, my main interest is to see if my nitrates finally get cut-down to 0.0 and, of course, if my algae dies off.

The "elite" part of the CP that you pay extra for, is just ferric hydroxide. This is a common phosphate remover and won't last nearly 6 months. If you want to run a phos remover, you'd be better off running it separably.
I used CP for years, until I read what a real water chemistry expert (on RC) said about it. I checked and now I just use GAC and its cheaper and works great. Purigen, IMO, is a great product.

Chemipure elite and Purigen in my 8gallon.
They have made a big difference in the water quality since I do not have a skimmmer on the tank.

Honestly, in order for a product to be effective in a tank, you have to have a reason for it, Otherwise you are just wasting money. Why are you inquiring about CPE?

+! Its easy to give a product credit when water looks good, even though the product may have nothing to do with it. I used CP for many years and really pushed it. I read a real water expert's explanation (RC's Randy Holmes-Farley) on the stuff. I checked another source and both said the ion-exchange claims were impossible in SW. I believe that is true. And paying extra for a little phos remover (The Elite stuff in CP Elite) makes no sense to me.

Granular activated carbon. Not all carbon is the same, much of it is worthless. here's a list of RC acronyms:

not to mention that claim that it remains active for 6 months sounds ridiculous considering what has been said here by the experts.

CPE isn't "junk" but you're better off using GAC and GFO as needed. I get my GAC and GFO at BRS. Compare price with CPE. No brainer.
