To Drill or not to drill, that is the question!
I am upgrading to a new 180gal glass aquarium and need some advice. I currently have 2 pre-drilled holes in the overflow. One is 1 1/2" and the other 1". They were used for BOTH the outflow and return before. I am not convinced this was enough flow and would like to know if I should use both of those for the out flow and drill 2 new holes in the back (red in the picture) of 1 1/2" each to accommodate the return? (Attached is a picture of my proposed setup)
I have both hard and soft corals and fish currently in a 75gal and want them to be upgraded. I believe I have the appropriate pump to handle the water turn over. Also, I have 250 pounds of sand and roughly the same for rock. Any advice is very appreciated! |

To Reef Central You could always just return over the back which would be easier and not require drilling. If you do decide to follow our plan just make sure there is something to break the syphon if the power goes out and that your sump can handle the back flow.

How far from the top do I drill? Is there a "rule of thumb"?
