Sump sponge: use it or toss it?
Hi all. First time posting. Thank you for everyone contributing. This forum is a great resource.
I have a 75g display tank with 2 clowns, 1 blenny, 1 foxface, mushrooms, and live rock. I have a 20g sump with filter sock and some bioactive rock material as well as a NWB-110 Reef Octupus skimmer. Here is my question. Do I need to have a filter sponge separating the return pump and main chamber of the sump? I recently took it out and it has decaying gunk in it. I don't see any benefit in keeping it in there. Will it cause microbubbles to accumulate in the display tank? Will it harm the return pump without the sponge in place? Thanks. |

Remove the sponge and see if you have microbubbles. If you do and you want them gone, get a second sponge and rotate one being used/one being washed. Rotate them regularly (daily is best).

sponges can collect detris and become a nitrate factory if they are not monitored.

+1 for tossing it. I would recommend a well maintained filter sock though. A pair of nylon panty hose works too
