Purpose of Relay in ATO
I recently installed an ATO to my sump . I have seen various places where a relay has been used but I did not in my set up. I am using Digital Aquatics submersible switches with an Aqualifter pump. What is the benefit of installing a relay in this system. My power is on a GFCI circuit with a surge protector. I have yet to come across an explanation as to why the relay is needed or if it was just preferred.

I believe they are used for Isolation, for example between 24V DC and 120V AC. This way a lower voltage circuit can be used for the switches that operate say a 120V AC pump.

In this case, the voltage rating on the switch isn't a concern, it's the current, you are far below the ratings and won't have any problems.
