Align the wet-side properly and give it a few days to simmer down the noise but don't expect it to be quieter than MP10s.

I think the mp10 and mp60s are balanced. The mp40s are not. There was a thread this not long ago

^^^^ thats what I did, but not because the mp40s or 10s were noisy, I just have a toddler that touches everything and I was worried about him ripping the motors off the side of the tank. however, I couldnt really hear my mp40, or mp10 unless I stuck my ear up to them

My mp40 has been dead quiet 20 minutes after I first installed it... Line up the spacer correctly then fine tune the placement my slightly twisting it between the wet and dry side. It made it totally silent. It was a bit noisy until I set the glass spacer correctly, too.

Well this doesn't sound very good.
The MP40 is bigger, more powerful, so it will be louder.

As long as your spacer is set correct and it aligns there should be minimal noise.
Off set it slightly and then it is noisy. I had my spacer too close and it was like pulling (drag) too much and noisy.

I have 2 MP-40 EWS on my new set-up. I was really peed off about how noisy they were, despite being super careful with glass thickness setting and trying all sorts of delicate alignment adjustments over a week. Just could not get them any where near quiet.
Fot the price we pay, it is a very noisy pump !!! So....following the thread on RC http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...earings&page=4 I bought new bearings (grade 5) from Boca and replaced the original ones. Whilst I had the unit apart, I put the dry side magnet on a balancing rig I use for model helicopter rotating parts and it was horribly out of balance. I did not want to start filing and drilling this magnet to get it into balance so I tried many small variations in position with the magnet and the rotors untill I got the best fit/balance condition. Now the unit is whisper quiet ....cant hear the ramp-up from 1 foot away....and I will do N0. 2 next. Please note in the instructions on the Thread that all of this work voids any Manufacturers warranty and is done entirely at your own risk But it does work !!!!! |
