How far off Oceanic glass brace for T5 lights?

I just got set up a used Oceanic Ultimate tank. The canopy that came with it is a pretty low canopy but I want to mount a retro T5 kit in it.

How far off the center glass brace do the lights have to be? If they are too close can they heat the glass up and do damage?

Currently I have a temporary set up over the tank and the lights are about 5 inches off the glass. At that height I can feel warmth on the glass but not very hot. The retro kit in the canopy would probably sit between 3-4 inches off the glass.

Should I build a new canopy or will this be ok?
