Kalk vs. 2 part
So as the title says I haven't been dosing much yet but think I am way over due to start. I'm trying to decide between 2 part and kalk. I have a 65 mixed reef that is mostly Lps dominate. I do however hope to put more sps in in the future. What are your opinions and best way to go about starting to dose?

kalk will work for lps without 2 part. sps even if if only a few colonies imo. kalk and 2 part is what i do.

Well I have a lot of coral in my tank and have never really doses too much. I dose occasionally when individual things are low but I want to make my cal, all, and mag a lil more consistent

If you're using a reasonably good brand of "reef" type salt, i.e. Reef Crystals, and doing regular water changes, you may not need to start dosing yet. But the use of Kalkwasser in your top off water will help to maintain your Ca and Alk between WC's. Use one tsp. per gallon of RO/DI water. As you add more stoney's/clams you may have to start using one of the 2 part supplements, even with the use of Kalk.
I wouldn't start dosing anything without testing. So, if you don't have a decent test kit/s for Ca, Mg and Alk make sure you get one, Salifert are good kits, and I've had good success with the new Red Sea Coral Foundation Pro kit that has all three tests in a kit. |
