The "best" salt is a matter of personal opinion. You will get a 100 different opinions on this. Best bet is to use the search function as this question gets asked about twice a week. You will find more posts and info than you can shake a stick at.

Happy Reefing!

I personally like using instant ocean, but that's just me.

They are all "best" depending on what you like. For me, "best" is Reef Crystals, for 2 reasons. My tank consumes a lot of alk and cal due to my heavy load of stonies, and RC comes with higher alk and cal numbers. Second, it is readily available from my LFS at a good price, cheaper than the cheapest on-line especially since there are no shipping costs for the 200 gallon box that I buy.

Just remember to change salt slowly. Usually issues with salt are more from changing too quickle\y than from the actual salt you are using. I have only had a real problem with Oceanic. I used to use Reef Crystals until they changed formula, then went back to Instant Ocean like I used to use for many years. I just raise the calcium a little in the mixing bucket since I started SPS.

"Which salt?" It all depends on you. They can all be mucked up... (compensation)

Whatever's locally available and least expensive. I've used 4 different brands over the years, and never noticed any changes attributable to the salt.

Red sea coral pro is what I use. By best salt are you referring to KZ's reefers best salt?

+1 on other replies , it is a matter of personal preference

my current choice is Red Sea Coral Pro
but I have used Instant Ocean, Reef Crystals, Tropic Marin and Coralife salts in various set ups over a few years

Cannot remember a single negative experience with any of them

I'm gonna say, its up to the reefer (personal preference). I use IO myself, and very pleased w/ the results over the past years.

Just get IO and balance out the parameters with BRS dosing powders. Definitely cheaper and accomplishes the same things

Around me, locally available does not equal least expensive. Salt around here is a lot more expensive than on line.

How do you guys switch a tank over to a new salt? My LFS suggested that instead of my weekly 5 gallon water change, I do 3 gallons with new salt for a couple of weeks and then go full force 5 gallons with the new salt after that. Does that sound right?

Asking which is the best salt to use is like asking which is the best oil to use in your car. You are going to get a good number of varied opinions.
FWIW, I use IO.

For a five gallon Water Change, it takes roughly 3 cups to get a 1.025 salinity, do to make the transition to your new salt, for yout weekly water change, the first week mix in 2 cups of your old salt, 1 cup of your new salt. The next week mix it 1 1/2 cups old, 1 1/2 new salt.3rd week do do 2 cups new salt, 1 cup old salt. Then the 4th week you should be able to mix it with 100% new salt.

Hope this helps,
-Ray
