Holy guacamole a mp60wes has crazy flow.

I must have been a good boy As the reef fairy brought me a new mp60wes today. It was my kids birthday so I did not get it hooked up till late tonight. I have been running a single mp40w on 90 with great results but wanted a bit more water flow on the far side of the aquarium. After I installed the unit and was getting the wet side in the exact position the instructions state to turn it to 100% to adjust the wet side. At 80% a large 10 head frogspawn lifted up and flew across the tank! I knew it was a lot of flow but this thing could blow the 3 piggies brick house down.

It did take forever to get the master slave setup on the old mp40. I first tried to updated the firmware but after an hour I found out the ES will only upgrade another ES. Then it took me resetting both drivers 7x before they finally "hooked" up. So far so good, both units are set in antisync at 50%. Not sure if I will keep the mp40, may just run the 60 solo.

A few notes, the 60 is very quiet in comparison and I just rebuilt the mp40 wet side. The 60 appears to be built way better. Even at a constant 80% it barely got warm compared to the 40 getting pretty hot at constant high speeds. The 60 is almost twice the size so it is more noticeable than the 40. It's also pretty heavy, to the point ecotech included a stick on clip to help support the weight. The flow is very wide and with the undertow makes for a mass circulation of water. IMO these make any closed loop system obsolete. All in all I love it. Happy reefing!

You put a MP60 on a 90 gal. Good Lord man, that's like putting a Rocket on a scooter.

Haha, good analogy. Most would suggest 2 mp40s on your tank, so i can understand why you weren't getting the desired results with one. A 120 is a wider tank too, so thats another reason a 60 works out well, the flow pattern is much wider like you said. If you had a thinner tank like a 125, even with the added length, you might have put that frogspawn into the next room! Congrats!

Haha. The good thing is I can throttle it way back and its future proof. Ill be getting a much much larger tank eventually.

I think we are at a tipping point in reefkeeping technology. The 3 steadfast rules of reefkeeping may no longer apply soon.

1. You can never have too much flow
2. You can never filter/skim too much
3. You can never have too much light

With these pumps, super skimmers, and crazy powerful LED's on the horizon these may not hold true much longer.

I used two MP60s on a 300 gallon SPS tank, and I had to throttle them back to about 60% to prevent the substrate from going everywhere. I just moved up to a 465 gallon bare bottom tank, and I have an MP60 and 40 on the right and the left sides and I let 'em rip. Awesome flow.

You know, you would be VERY surprised how flow is cut down as corals grow. Very much so with large thick SPS branches. It can catch you by surprise if your not careful. I have a MP20 on a Redsea max 130 34 gallon tank and I need more................
