silicone wearing off?
all -
I had purchased a used tank (3 years old) and the previous owner did a bad job with cleaning the algae off the glass w/o hitting the corner seams. Now it appears that its a bit thin, I would say 1/4 of an inch remains. Is this to be any concern? How long would it lasts before the rest of the silicone give out? |

i would not take a chance and just re-do the silicone or in some cases just go over the existing silicone, so u can sleep well.

Depends on the tank size and condition. I have a 5.5 where the silicone got ragged looking and cut off all but an 1/8th inch. Tank has been that way for a few years.
When I built a tank I looked at a friends tank that he built, the silicone seam overlap wasn't visible. Built my half cube the same way. IMO the silicone overlap on the glass is more a financial decision by the fabricator than a structural issue. It's cheaper to spread out the silicone than it is to put a nice clean narrow seam in the tank. jmo
