Start small or wait?
I have a 150 gallon tank that is going to be a reef tank but is currently a African cichlid tank just waiting for a for parts to complete the reef setup. My question is for the time being I have a 29 gallon that is going to be my quarantine tank I have a spare filter heater and sand should cycle this tank for now and get a fish or two ready to put into the big tank when that is all cycled or just wait lol. Thanks for your help in advance!!!

Yes I would say start cycling the 29 but dont put any Rock or Sand. Is better if you dont because later on if u need to treat a fish for something it will Kill your LR and LS. So do the tank with water and either buy bacteria to kick start the cycle or throw in a fresh shrimp. Also Read the sticky on how to set up a QT.

If your going to cycle the 29 you might as well put some rock in it to move to the 150. Cycling a tank with just water wouldn't do you much good as the water column doesn't hold much bacteria. Maybe I misunderstood.
