Tap water to RODI
Ok, so I setup my tank about 3 weeks ago. I have a 90g FOWLR setup. Right now I have 60 lbs live rock and some hermits/snails. I will be adding the rest of the rock this week. My readings are pretty good being 3 weeks in. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0 and Nitrates 5. I started up my system using tap water which I now know probably wasnt't the best idea. I want to switch to an RODI system. What I'm not sure about is if it's ok to start doing this with such a new tank or if I should wait until my tank is more established. Im assuming I would be fine as long as I'm only doing partial changes (10% or so). I want to make sure I don't do anything that will jeopardize my biological filter.

Are you adding cycled rocks or new rocks to your tank this week? You will see a spike in ammonia and nitrates if you add new rocks.
On the other hand, I am amazed that you didn't have an algae bloom when using tab. Since you already have tab water in your tank during your cycling period. You can do a massive water change, perhaps 90% or 100% with RODI after your tank is cycled. |

Switch to RODI as soon as possible! If the rocks you plan to add are fully cured you should be okay. If not you can expect another cycle.

I will be adding new rock so I do expect to see some spikes. I went through the diatom stage and that is finally dying down but now I am getting some green film algae. Seeing the algae made me realize how dumb it was to use tap water. I understand that you can still get algae using RODI but if I can limit it in anyway possible I would rather go that route. Thanks for the advice. As soon as I am cycled I will be doing the full water change. I wish the LFS had told me about RODI before I setup this tank.
