Home Depot Buckets

Has anyone ever used Home Depot buckets (large 5-gallon orange buckets) for mixing or transporting water? Would one be better off using a food grade bucket for this purpose?

Thanks- Aaron

I've heard orange dye leeches, and they're not food grade

The blue buckets from Lowes are safer.

Thanks for all the responses. They sure are convenient and inexpensive. I end up picking one up almost every time I'm there. I'll be sure to label these so they are used for aquarium water only.

HD recently started carrying a white bucket with measurements on the sides in gallon and litres. I like those better. Lowe's has something similar. I find the measure marks to come in handy.

i use lowes/home depot buckets for storing freshwater, draining tank water (different buckets), and occasionally mixing saltwater.

no issues to report.

you can get food grade buckets from them i believe, you just have to look. one of the buckets i got came with a "food grade plastic" sticker on it.

I can guarantee you that if you use those home depot buckets, all of your fish will die within 20-30 years.

Heard from where? Because if 10 people read your post...that is all the more spreading misinfo around from hearing it somewhere on the internets.

I have used them for years with no issues. I prefer the Lowes blue buckets now, simply because blue=water. Strict "blue" rule in the household to prevent the use of my aquarium buckets for anything else

I never used them because of the metal handle and rust, but maybe that isn't a concern.

Check out home depot's black rubber sealed lid the center part screws out to seal air tight.... expensive but its a lot easier to get into and better to seal. fyi

These are what I use for ATO and kalk. Only a couple bucks more and to me worth it. Easy to see thru them for water level and measurements right on the side.
