Reef Octopus NW-150 Setup Questions

I am sure there are reef octopus skimmer threads but I could not find one to address my questions.

I have my skimmer set and it is running, here is what I need some clarification on.

1. The instructions state that I should plug the skimmer in and set the water about 1 inch above where the neck transitions starts. The skimmer has a line that says min water level, is this where it should be set initially?

2. When the instructions are referencing water does it mean the bubbles that the skimmer is creating, not the skimmate but the very white bubbles that are created when you first plug the skimmer in. it does not seem that you could actually get true water much higher in the skimmer.

3. For the water return can I put an elbow in the points the water down into the sump vs letting it flow straight out, I kinda wanted to do what I did with my tank drain line where it just touches the top of my water in the sump.

4. Is there any specific way i should initially set the skimmer other than what the instructions say. I know they are there for a reason but I know you reefers out there have found ways to set it up better than the instructions say.

Thanks.
