Live Rock/Algae Advice
Hey guys, I am new to the forum. I am also a newbie to saltwater tanks and am in the process of setting up a 55 gallon tank with a 18 gallon sump. I have purchased about 45 pounds of dead rock from my local LFS. I also recently came across a Craigslist ad where a guy is selling a 30 gallon setup with about 30 pounds of live rock and 15 pounds of live sand for $50. The rock is what I am interested in the most and the rest is just a bonus since I pretty much have everything else and am ready to fill my tank. The question that I have is that in the pictures, the live rock in his tank has quite a bit of what looks to be some green algae. I have attached two pictures of the rock. Does this rock look ok? Is it ok to add to my tank or should I stay away?
Thanks! |

Stay away, if u are not comfortable. Just wait for your dead rock to seed. Get off to a good start. U will have enough algae problems on your own. No need to bring someone else problems to u. These rocks may be leeching phosphate or carrying aiptasia, neither u want. Just my 2 pennies.

To Reef Central +1 @ MinnFish Unless your totally prepared to fight the cause and the over growth of hair algea stay away. If you want to help seed your tank find some rock that looks good to you and you feel comfortable with. Go with your gut, if you feel you need to ask if it's ok, it probably isn't.

Yeah thats stuff is pretty fuzzy. Even as an advanced aquarist I would pass on it.

Thank you! I was skeptical for sure, but just wanted to check with some of the experts. Seems like a great deal, but I don't want to deal with the issues it may cause, especially being a new saltwater aquarist.
