Copepods make it through canister filter?

I'm building a sump and using my canister filter i already have to pump the water back up to the main aquarium. Will copepods and all the other good stuff from a sump refugium make it through the canister filter back to the main display? Or will I need to take all the filtration out of the canister?

I would take everything out of your canister filter. Just use it as a return pump. There are a lot easier ways to do what a canister filter does in the SW world. Filter socks for mechanical, LR for bio, reactors for chemical, and all of them are lower maintenance than a canister filter. I have had my fair share of canister filters on my FW tanks and no matter what brand or how expensive they are still a pain to crack open, clean, and restart.

My copepods come out of my canister all the time. Espc when I restart them for feeding time.

I am in the process of getting rid of two fx5's

You will be surprised to see what grows in there.

Would a canister be kind of like a cryptic tank? But only a canister not a tank... Probably to much flow right?

My recently retired canister needs to be about 28" below the waterline in order to function properly. Just double check that your canister will function properly.

I had pods living in the sponges and would occasionally see them shoot out the return.

I have seen brittle stars, copepods, sponges, and bristle worms in mine.

It is just dark in there. With lots of flow.

I wouldn't think in a properly setup canister filter no pods whatsoever would be able to pass the filteration. How big are they anyway. Visable to naked eye I've read. If dissolved solids are caught and filtered out how could a pod pass thru? Unless their breeding downstream of filteration... IMO

They get through because thy have legs and a brain. Crawl and swim.

The edge of the filter pad is not rubber lined and sealed to prevent anything from going around it.

Would you mind elaborating more so on your experiences with these?
If you do not mind, please include as much detail as possible.
Try and talk me into it and try to talk me out of it (pros/cons.)

The fx5's became nitrate factories. As often as I would clean them out they would become filled again.

It was almost like they were building inside them instead of eating it.

I also messed up once and replaced ALL of my filter media and caused a HUGE spike in nitrates as there was nothing to eat the load that was being produced.

To give you more detail...

I go them and placed 2 of them on a 120. Ran fine for many months. Then I noticed I could never keep my nitrate levels down. After cleaning (rinsing the filters) I would notice a small decline.

Once I got my 180 and put an actual sump below the tank I have had zero issues. Yes a sump is in theroy a smaller tank from the DT, but I placed live rock and macro algae in it to combat my nitrate.

If you go over to my 180 build thread you can see all that I have.

I also have an older thread that shows my 120 build on here too.

Ask away. I'll give you my side, one of being PRO fx5 to one that finally said... No Thanks.
