What pump to use (Mag 7, 9.5 or 12)???

Hello,

I am looking for advice on which pump to use for my system that I am building.

I have a 75g aquarium with a 21.8g operating water volume sump (CRYS36S from Trigger Systems - http://www.triggersys.com/sumps_detailed.html). The height from the pump to the return on the aquarium is approximately 50 inches. I have two Hydor Koralia powerheads rated at 1050GPH and one rated at 1400GPH for additional flow in my aquarium. I was planning on keeping a mixture of everything that can live together in peace (fish and coral - medium stock).

My question is which return pump do you recommend? I was leaning towards the Mag-Drive Supreme 9.5 pump but could go with the 7 or 12 model instead if recommended. If you recommend any other model or brand of pump please let me know as well.

Thank you,

P.S.: I am only looking for in-sump pumps. Please don't recommend any external pumps.

I'd go with the 7, I have a 90g with a 30g sump/fuge and a 6' head height and have to have my mag 9.5 dialed down a bit so the overflow can keep up.

Are you set on mag pumps? There's a lot of other more efficient options out there.

there is a headloss calculator on the home page that may be of some use to you.

I use the mag7 myself for my 75gal, but whatever pump you use make sure your skimmer can keep up with the return flow, as an example...with head loss, my flow return is aprox. 450gph and my skimmer can process 500gph.

Have you looked into eheim at all? Excelt quality but a lil pricy. Mine has worked out great! No complaints.

I have a mag 7 on my RR 75G. Anything more then that and the drain gets extremely noisy. If you have a 1.5" drain you might have use for a 9.5 or Eheim 1262.

sicce or hydor, much better quality and best bang for buck, you need to use Much larger plumbing in the output of the mags to achieve the advertised pumps as they are originated as pond pumps.

Quiet One pumps use less energy, run cooler and are quieter than Mag. Enheim are good and WaterBlaster Pumps are good, quiet and low energy but more expensive then Mag and Quiet One.

+1 for the Sicce Syncra 3.0. Its much quieter and uses less power + the flow is adjustable. If your sump is too loud with the flow wide opened, you just turn a knob to lower the pumps output and quiet your sump down. Im running mine a little over halfway opened my 125, both pump and sump...........silent.

Problem with those is to get the stated GPH you need 1 inch pipe. Most of us use 3/4 inch on these midsize aquariums. Even with my mag 9.5 the 3/4 is really restricted due to barb fittings that cut the flow way way down.

I would run an Eheim 1260, 1262 or Sicce 3.5, 4.0. I would stear clear of Mags, they are loud, hot energy hoggs.

I see this misstated a lot. The 1262 consumes 13 less watts than the 9.5. That does not qualify as a "hot energy hog" to me. FWIW I put my mag on a silicon mat and its the questiest pump in my aquarium. The mp40 mp60, bubble blaster, even a mj1200 are louder. That's even with the mat under them too.

I have heard loud mags that were sitting directly on glass or 10 years old, but I personally never had that problem.

And fwiw the sicce4.0 is 5 watts less than a mag 9.5. All three pushing right at 950gph.

+1

I run a Mag 7 on my 75, and it goes through a chiller before it gets back to the tank. Slow flow through the sump; high flow in the tank.

I use a 9.5 on my 65G, but as was mentioned you have to make sure your overflow can handle that flow.

If it can all the larger pump will just I crease circulation and maybe let you get rid of one of those power heads.

I have a Mag 9.5 on my 60 gallon with a ball valve on it, dialed back just a bit. It's better to have a pump that's larger than needed, as long as you can adjust it to suit your overflow.

I think my overflow can handle a Mag 9.5. Its two 1" durso style pipes with a overflow box rated at 1800gph. But I'm also looking at other pumps now. I guess my question is not which pump I should get but rather how much flow would be adequate for my system.

Thanks for your advice and opinions. I had looked at Eheim pumps before but not Sicce pumps or any other.
