I would say the new great thing would be L.E.D. lighting or LED MH combos.
The rest still the same. Good water flow, easy on the skimming , easy on stocking fish , some type of Bio filter to collect unwanted debris from collecting. |

I'd look for something with high power LEDs, rather than the Foster and Smith light (of which you'd need two 0n a 120) with 108 very inefficient 1W LEDs. If you're handy with DIY projects a kit from Rapidled.com using top end components is a reasonable way to get started. built 4 individual units with 24 Cree XR-E LEDs for my old 120 and had plenty of light for my SPS. There are some threads with boatloads of great information on the subject here.
Use the correct dimmable drivers for the separate color channels and you can create sunrise/sunset scenarios, as well as weather, and storms with a controller.

I don't know much about the Vertex lights. They look super nice, and have a lot of built in functionality. From what I could see they use Cree XP-G, and XP-E LEDs, the same I would recommend to DIY. The price seems a little steep, but then again, there is a lot of functionality included. I'm pretty visually oriented, so the PC interface would be especially nice. To DIY something operationally similar (and I'm not sure how many LEDs the 4' SR fixture I looked has), including an Apex controller you'd likely be somewhere north of $1500

Though expensive, Radions are state of the art. Truly amazing what they can do.
I recently bought Deep Blue LEDs for a frag tank and so far (3 months) all sps and lps are thriving and growing fine. The Deep Blues are very affordable and wouldn't hesitate using them in my main tank if the radions are beyond the budget. my2cents |
