Husband almost killed me!!!

I had a 30 gallon tank upstairs in my computer room for almost 8 years. I had a few floods over the years, mostly due to a HOB overflow taking the water from the tank down to my sump. Also, the hob fuge flooded a time or two. I learned my lesson and stopped using the HOB overflow and fuge. I thought I had caught it early and got the fans on it. I knew there are a few places on the downstairs ceiling with water stains. No biggie. Well....fast forward to earlier this week. I took this tank down 2-3 weeks ago and my hubby took the small window unit out of the window. For some unknown reason he pulled the carpet back. Massive water damage, we thought from the ac leaking into the wall. Rotted floor, walls, mildewed insulation. Rotted 2x4. All this was several feet from the aquarium. I was so releived!! My husband hates my tanks. Thought I had dodged the bullet and it was the ac leaking into the wall. He brought me upstairs yesterday. He had torn more of the drywall out and pulled more of the carpet up. The room is obviously not level and the water had run from the tank, under the carpet across the room causing massive damage. I am lucky I did not crash through to the downstairs. It has also run downstairs into the guestroom and ruined the ceiling, walls and floor in the guestroom downstairs. This is all old damage and we changed insurance companies 6 months ago!! This will be several thousand dollars to repair. I do not mean 1 or 2 thousand either!!! We knew there was a leak downstairs but thought it was where the guestroom roof joined onto the rest of the house, but no. It was the aquarium!!! So, the moral of the story is, nothing HOB!!! Thank God my new tank is drilled!!! It did not help that our washer is leaking and has ruined the Laundry Room floor. We discovered that this week. My husband pulled up the tile he had so carefully installed a few years back. The sub flooring is soaked. Luckily insurance will pay for this!!! Plus the freaking faucet at the kitchen sink is leaking when I hook the RODI unit up to it!!! So bought a new faucet. So, how was your day???

All I can think of from this was how much water you had leaking out of that tank?!

I further caution you on putting a large tank upstairs. Water can weigh a lot and if your husband is gonna redo the flooring, I suggest you double up on the floor joists under where you plan to put your tank to accommodate for weight. Sorry this happened to you.

Raquel, this was just a 30 gallon tank. No need for reinforcement. The floor joists held up well or it might have crashed downstairs. Current tank, also 30 gallon, is downstairs. Hubby will not be doing the work, but a contractor. Our house is not on a slab and we have a crawlspace underneath. A friend of mine who now lives in MS but was in the Memphis club, did have her 90 gal tank come crashing through her floor and hitting the dirt underneath. YIKES!! Unsure exactly how much water leaked out. 5 gal at most but it happened on several occasions. I appreciate everyone's support. Nanodoc, I have some Klonopin, will that do? LOL. Offerings sent to Poseiden too.

And I thought I had all the excitement over here with all the kids and family visiting. It is good to hear the insurance company will pick up the tab.

Oh, I thought the new tank was larger. My bad, it's the architect in me. ;-)

Going to check with the old insurance company. In some states, if the damage was done and you were unaware of it, the insurance company covering you at the time, is liable to cover you. I had the old company for 25+ years. My aunt lives in KS and she said this is the way it is there. She told me to check with the state insurance commisioner if the company balks. We will see. Techdiver, our current company should pick up the damage in the laundry room but not the aquarium damage. LOL. Raquel, no problem!! Only I keep the same size tank!! Most folks go bigger but do love my new cube which is 24x24x12. My all time fav though is my 3 G I have had over 5 years!

Complete Restorations came out yesterday. The water from the leaking washer in the laundry room, which backs up to my tank in the dining area, had gotten the floor just adjacent to my tank wet. I knew this and had planned to carefully drain some of the water out of the tank and move it and replace the water. It is on laminate and I put the slider pad things underneath it to lift the stand up off the floor a bit for circulation, etc. However, when the adjuster came out, he immediately called Complete Restorations and they came out and moved the tank!! My husband called and told me and I was a nervous wreck until I got home. No damage done and not a coral out of place and everything plugged in. All tile up in laundry rm and laminate under the tank was removed. Industrial dehumidifier and fan going. I was so afraid they would slide the tank around on the stand and hit the bulkheads up against the opening in the stand and crack it. Obviously that did not happen!! Only problem is that strong fan is bringing the water temp down. I had to rev up my heater this am. I will be so glad when all this is over and my life gets back to normal

I was too Teddy! Now if they just get it moved back to where it was with the same results. I am tempted to just tell them to leave it where it is now and I will move it after the floor is done.

The only answer here is to avoid water in your house. You and pipes seem to hate each other. You want to keep the floor dry, all your pipes want to have a party... it's a no win situation.

It is good that they moved the tank without damaging anything. You may want to add a second heater set for the same target temp or replace it with a larger one instead of turning up the one. You may have less chance of having a temp spike that way. I have a larger wattage heater if you need to use it.

I do have 2 heaters in the tank, both set to the same temp. also have the stand doors open and a radiator type heater in front of the stand doors/sump. Temp now running 78-80 so all is good!!! Steph, pipes have never broken. Possible water leakage from old tank upstairs vs water leaking around window on north side of the house into the wall causing the old damage in the computer room and downstairs guest room. Leaking ice maker flooded the kitchen in 2010. The hot water hose connection going into the washer apparently jarred loose when the washer was spinning causing the most recent leak in laundry room, which extended into the dining area. We did have a pipe burst back in the 80's in Memphis on Christmas Day. It was a very cold day. We came home from Arkansas to find water running down the street. Upon entering our bedroom, our light fixture in the ceiling over the bed was like an upside down fountain with all the water running onto our bed, (pipes were in attic in that house), across the floor and out the sliding glass door onto our patio and around the back of the house, down the hill into the street!! That was a mess. We had a 70 gal tank of Cichlids in the room at the time!!
