So I think I have a smart hermit crab or a really bored one...

He try's to climb up the silicone using his claws to pinch it and pull him self up he made it about a quarter of the way up before falling.

Is this a new tank? Anything for it to eat?

I've always had hermits do that over the years. I think they just like to climb, since mine have always had plenty to eat.

Mine used to do that all the time in the ten gallon. Once the larger tank was fully cycled they where added to it and they stopped. Granted the larger tank is the Red sea tanks, so there is no silicone for them to climb on, and they have a lot more rock work to play in now.

There's tons for him to eat on the rocks there's algae and I heard they love algae tablets also so every once in a while I throw one in and he will go after it.

Mine do it in our 55. For a while there was one that kept trying to climb up the overflow using the spirorbid featherdusters as climbing pegs LOL. The other day, I caught one almost all the way up the back glass climbing the coralline.
