Dry rock

I just received 90 pounds of dry rock from BRS, I have more coming plus the addition of LR from my LFS. There isn't anything in my tank at all. Do I need to wash the dry rock before I do anything or can I put it in my tank as is and start everything up? If I do need to wash it off. What do I use?

I would do a thorough rinse at least first or you will have a lot of debris floating and clouding up the water. I use RO water when I rinse, but it's possible you could just use tap water since you don't have anything in the tank yet and will still need to go through a cycle.

That's what I was thinking, I just wasn't sure if i needed to use saltwater or ro/di water or could I use tap water. The rock to me looked like it needed to be rinsed but I wasn't sure if it's advised or not.

Take the rock outside and blast it off with a garden hose. Try to flush out the holes and crevasses. I would then shake off as much water as possible, dip it in RO/DI water and place it in your tank.

I also bought dry rock from BRS over a year ago. I rinsed mine off with a garden hose and then filled up a brute garbage can with RO/DI water and soaked all of it for about 24 hours. As RockOn681 mentioned, you still need to go through a cycle yet so tap water will not hurt.

Happy Reefing

Good question.....was following this thread too as I just got my dry rock and set it all up in tank without doing anything.......now wondering if I shouldn't take it all back out to rinse. Would it do any harm to fill it up when the time comes and let it settle on its own?
