canister filter for a 20 gallon?
i currently have a 20 gallon with a powerhead 400gph and an aqua clear 30 should i ditch the hob filter for a small canister filter? and if i go with a canister what should i put in it as far as media or some live rock?

You are better off with the hob than the canister filter. Canister filters are usually not recommended for saltwater.

Keep the HOB, canisters tend to accumulate detritus and contribute to nitrate problems.

I run 306 fluval canister in my 40g. I don't have skimmer and no sump and it works great for me. I put chemipure elite, gfo and Purigen in the media chamber and I clean it every week, clean up is a breeze. It's more versatile than HOB, just clean it weekly. Canisters have their place in reef tanks, just need to know how to use them. Most people go against canister most likely haven't even used it.

thanks for the info everyone i just want to make sure im doing things right. this is my first saltwater tank so all the help is much appriciated.

No canister...HOB is your best bet for now. Use it for some flow, add some carbon and leave it be!
