Help high ammonia with sea star-had to set up quick 1 wk old
I posted this on another section but just saw this section so maybe someone is up. Several on other section said it's cycling of course and toxic. I have cooking pan of ocean water he was in (sea star) but it's now 1 week old. I also have premixed salt from great local fish store. Should I pour it in the pan and pour out the old ocean water and put him in it? I also have Amquel Plus that several said buy but don't know if is safe and would work on the sea star. He's the size of your hand... thanks and below fills in the story... Gosh I don't want this guy to die thanks! I'm totally new to salt water. I set up a 29 gallon tank, I believe by Tetra (Walmart), last Friday and put in 8 pounds of dry lace rock and 10 pounds of Caribbean Live rock (loved the creatures!!!). I thought they'd rang up the live sand at the LFS, but they didn't so bought 20 pounds of it and added Sunday 3 am. Wednesday the LFS got new Live rock so I bought another 5 pounds of it. Everything has been great on it but today I took the water to Petsmart and they tested with the strips. The ammonia was 3.0 to 5.0 (color strips), and nitrates are .5. The salt I tested with hydrometer (sp) and it was too high at 1.03 and now low yesterday and today after I added 2 gallons of distilled water per my LFS store at 1.020.
We were in South Carolina and my daughter found the Asteria star (not sure if Rubens or Forbes). I would love to send a picture to someone to add as I couldn't online? He was way up on beach about dead. Then I read they were dying as ocean cold so never found a boater to take him out where he wouldn't become a souvenere. . He lived 1.5 months in a bucket in the kitchen with us changing water (from ocean) every 3 days, and then partial changes.. He's doing good in the tank and actually will eat from my hand (krill that is dried). If he see's my daughter he stiffens and drops to the bottom upside down..lol He is so cool! I bought Amiquel Plus. Should we do a 10% change and add it? I don't want him to die.. Also, some of the live rock has coral and carline. I bought instant ocean reef additive. Would this hurt the sea star? or make the situation worse? I want to add a couple of fish later. thanks for help! Kim |

I put Jungle Start Zyme in initially as couldn't get to a fish store in time. They said bacteria was basically the same... should I add the bio kind now?

i use amquel but prefer prime. i am also a big fan of stability, and biozyme for new setups. te badge is a test device that hangs from your glass on the inside of the aquarium and is like a thermometer for amonia. makes sure you get the marine one though, as i think there is a freshwater one also
