NERAC 2013 Cancelled.
Hi Everyone,
As many of you know LIRA hosts an annual conference at the Long Island Aquarium every March called NERAC. Unfortunately this years show is being cancelled, the change of date to February along with Sandy affecting many we have not had enough time to secure speakers and vendors for this years event. With the cancellation the club will hold a regular meeting in March.

The dates available for our event are governed by catering.
If the dates we would like are booked we are out of luck. |

This stinks. I don't know the logistics but I think it would be a shame to miss a year. THis event is excellent. Is there any chance of a smaller conference?

That's too bad, NERAC is a great event and always a good time.

We need to book the room with catering for 2 nights, the Friday to setup and Saturday for the event; if the hotel and aquarium are booked not much we can do about it, same goes for the hotel rooms. Switching venues is not really an option as the costs would skyrocket, thanks to Joe we get a very discounted rate.

You would think that the hotel/aquarium would keep that weekend open for nerac. Isnt it the same time every year?

I believe the Hotel/Aquarium gives us an extremely low rate if anything for that space. I would imagine if they have someone who wants to book it for full price then they would need to give preference to that customer.

The aquarium makes its revenue from catering events. We can't really ask them to loose money to hold a conference for a local club. They book up many many months in advance. Trust me, I'm having my wedding there and there was very limited availability.

+ 1 on appreciating how generous Joe and the Aquarium have been on pricing for the club, many thanks. Though I was looking forward to the conference, its good to see they are busy, the aquarium really is an asset to the Island.

Somthin to look into... the local (Riverhead)Moose Lodge of riverhead has a large bingo hall in the basement. It has sealed concrete floors. It does have a ground floor entrance, so vendors wont have to carry tanks downstairs. I have no idea of what the pricing would be for 2 days. Possibly somthing to look into. Its no more than 3 miles away from the aquarium. Also maybe we can do away with the catering to cut costs, or just go with pizza. This is the one reefing event that prevents us long islanders from having to go into the city. It would be ashane to lose it this year.

One thing to think about is the cost. The cost of this event is so reasonable because of where it is held and the deal that we get. Also, one of the great aspects of it is dinner in front of the reef. I don't know about you, but I don't really want to have dinner at the Moose Lodge.

Not everyone goes to the dinner. Besides I think most people can handle not eating in front of the reef tank for once.
