Coralline algae?

Tank is 4 months and coralline is taking off but I noticed some coralline spots are peeling off, what's causing that or is that normal? thanks

What are your levels in the tank?

Are you adding any additives? Mg Calcium

Sometimes Coraline will attach to other items and spread, only to have the backing of what ever it was on die off and peel away.

What's the size of the tank and how much corals do you have? If not much corals and a smaller size tank you barely have to dose Ca/alk/Mg since you replenish it back into your system through water change. You should try adding strontium since it promote coralline growth.

It can be normal, it can be bad, depending on your parameters. What are your parameters: calcium, alk, magnesium, salinity, nitrates?

I agree with thebkramer. Never "try adding" anything without knowing your current levels or knowing the levels you're trying to achieve. If you can't test for it, don't add it!

I assume your talking about it peeling off of the glass. If it is still "taking off" but some spots are peeling off, I wouldn't worry about it. I have areas on my glass where the coraline is missing but it will be back in a month so I dont stress it because parameters are great and coral look great and growing.

Not to hijack but Im just curious does anyone dose strontium? I have never seen anyone list it in their parameters and yet most online vendors suggest adding it.

The tank is 40g and few corals Xenia GSP and couple of softies and mushrooms. Coralline is spreading fast but few patches also peeling off the glass. I dose b ionic cal/Alk manually everyday and 10% weekly water change. I test my cal/Alk/mag weekly to check my dosing.
Cal 420
Alk 10
Mag 1450
Salinity 1.025
Ph 8.1
Temp 78

Nitrate level missing, but otherwise parameters are certainly within range. Anyhow, you don't mention nuisance algae, so I assume nitrates are fine. So, I wouldn't worry about it. Some coralline will recede, some will grow, but so long as the overall effect is growth, everything is fine. One day someday, you'll be scraping them off .

No issue with nuissance algae, not yet anyway. I'm already scraping some off the coralline off the side glass. Nitrate is between 0-5ppm last I test 2 months ago.
