Question on flow in a 48"x48" tank.
I am currently in the planning stages and just getting ready to start making purchases for a new, custom 48"x48"x20" tank, primarily housing SPS. The tank will be setup peninsula style with a single overflow on the back wall. Ultimately I would prefer to not have powerheads on the sides of the tank, so I am considering one mp60 centered on the overflow in a dry dock flanked by an mp40 on each side.
Question is would this be enough flow or would the mp60 be an over kill and should be replaced with a 3rd mp40? Thanks for your time, Brian

Brian
You should check with "Frank" on the PNWMAS forum (I see you're already a member there) He has the same size/setup you're planning (a very nice tank) He's a really nice guy that I'm sure would be happy to answer any questions you might have |

You could also go w a closed loop system

I have looked into closed loops and I am fairly confident that I will not be going that route at this time. I simply do not want to deal with all the extra added plumbing and they do not appear to be much of a cost savings up front and in the long run.

His build thread probably doesn't get much traffic because I think most of the regulars there have all seen it live... He's hosted meetings and occasionally sells some nice frags
Just shoot him a PM. Like I say, super nice guy, I'm sure he'd be happy to help out with any questions you have |

I wouldn't center the Vortech. Id offset it and allow it to create a gyre circulating the tank either clockwise or counter clockwise. Its a more efficient means of moving a large volume of water and keeping it moving.

I would just do them to either side. A center one will fight the gyre.

How many mp40's do you suggest for this footprint?

Well, I emailed the question to Ecotech and they suggested a single, offset mp60 as username suggested. Looks like I will give that a shot, if it doesn't pan out I will bite the bullet and add a mp40 on one of the sides.
