Skimmer Overkill

Hi all,

Im currently setting up a 45g cubish (24x24x18) with 20g long sump.

I have been offered a bubble magus nac7 from a local reefer for a good price. Would this be overkill for my setup or will it just allow me to have a heavy bioload ? Don't wanna pass up a good deal but want good performance as well

Not overkill, go for it. I ran a SWC160 cone on a 40 breeder.

No such thing as overkill beside when you upgrade your tank, you won't need to buy a skimmer.

There wont be any tank upgrades as I'm actually down grading after a few years of larger systems. I thought i read somewhere if you dont have the bioload for the skimmer it wont keep a proper head of foam ?
Hope Im wrong because I want to jump on this skimmer

No, it will be ok. It's not that big and the tanks not that small

This is totally false and terrible advice. Too big of a skimmer and you will never keep the foam head and thus your skimmer won't skim properly.

I think you'll be fine with this skimmer. Like I said, I ran a SWC 160 cone on my 40 breeder and never had issues producing foam or nog for that matter. I ran a Deltec mce 600 on a 30 cube with no issues of not producing nog. Now if you said you had a good deal on a super reef octopus 5000int, I'd say to big.

I have been search other build threads for 50ish gallon cubes and most are running skimmers rated for at least 120g. I think I will give it a try. Worst case I sell. I think these skimmers get overrated by the manufacturer anyways
