Sortove????
RODI or distillation are the only two ways to get consistently clean water. Everything else is going to leave a little something behind. If it is a small tank then you might get away with buying bottled distilled from the store. Search around on here for what to do with the waste water. Many of us use it for watering plants, filling the washing machine, flushing the toilets. Just because we call it waste doesn't mean you have to throw it away.

I have my RODI unit mounted above my washing machine. When I make water, the waste line fills up the washer and I do a load of laundry. No water wasted.
Buying distilled water is your other option but will cost a heck of a lot more than an RODI unit over time.

Depending on where you live there might be chlorminies in the water. OTHERWISE.. a standard (Sedi/Carbon/RO/DI) filter will work.
It all depends on how much flow you want it to have too. Making a day: 5gal/10gal/50gal/75gal/100gal... As you go up the price increases and your replacement of the membranes might increase.

Everything. You only want pure water left.
Some things that may cause problems are: Phosphate and nitrate which fuel algae. Chlorine and chloramine which kill everything. Copper and other metal salts that kill inverts. Silicates which fuel diatom blooms. Organics which fuel algae and bacterial blooms. Hardness which may drive your alkalinity steadily higher and higher. I could go on but you get the picture.

theres a guy on youtube that makes videos..I think he calls himself La Fishguy. He used a carbon filter for his clients. I would NOT recommend just this but I guess if thats the way you gotta do it its an option. cant remember the name of the video but i think it was like "mixing 600 gallons of water" or something like that. He actually does talk about the benefits of using ro/di though so keep that in mind

ro/di is ur best bet. it will leave u back just pure water, regarding waste water, like mention above u can use it for many thing. washing machine, water plants or yard, baths etc.
