A new beginner from Turkiye

Hello All,

I guess my story is same with most of us. After lots of years in freshwater tanks, I decided to jump into saltywater. It tok me months to read and search for the techniques and necessary knowledge, I realized that it is the only way to jump into water to learn swimming. I would like to thank you all for the topics I've read here which gave me lots of knowledge.

Here is the plan for future reef tank ;

Tank size ; 90 x 90 x 50 cm clear glass 10mm. (finished)
Sump ; acrylic sump sizes are not certain yet

PS : Tunze Doc Skimmer 9420 (bought)
Reactor : DIY reactor (finished)
Wave : Tunze 9045 x 2 (in plan)
Return : Newwave 4500 (in plan)
Algea Scrubber : DIY (finished)

Live Rock : planning to use dead rock for the beginning will be bought this weekend.

Salt : CoralX Salt mix (A local producer)
Lighting : Not deci,ded yet bu I guess I will go for LED + T5 lighting fixtures.

The tank will arrive this weekend and I will try to send the first photos. All your advices will be highly apreciated to create a long term healthy tank.

Merhaba---I don't know but a few words of Turkish, though I spent two weeks in your beautiful country, and most everything I know how to say involves food. Welcome to RC. Your English is beautiful.

When you start your tank, with the dry rock, you will need one 'live' rock to start it off. You can get this from another hobbyist, or even one small soft-coral specimen rock can do it: this will bring in the bacteria you need.

Sounds like a nice setup! Why the T5 and LED combo btw? I can see the point of MH and T5 but if you go LED there should be no need for anything else.

...and from Sweden, thanks for all the yummy food!

We beat down Spain, if memory serves, together a few hundred years ago and our king brought home all these delicacies from the Ottoman Empire. Still popular today (salt licorice and arrak to mention a couple) which is not surprising considering that salt herring and turnips was the fare back then.

I am glad that you liked my country during your visit. Hopefully I will make my first water test this weekend. I am planning to attach a small live rock from a hobbyist which I am sure about the health of his tank.

for LED + T5 's I am not very sure about the efficiency of the LED's alone that's why I want to make a combination with T5's.

LED's, given that you chose well, are by far the most potent lights avaliable to the hobby. I don't think even the most rabid led hater will debate that.

They aften fall short on colors and can give a washed out look to tanks but a little research and smart shopping/diy will take care of that. I went from 250w mh to 120w led and had to dial them down to under 50% or I would have fried everything....it is BRIGHT!

Thanks for your kind interest. I will share the sloutions I find here by tomorrow and ask for your evaluations on them vs my tank sizes.

Day, storm etc simulations can be operated through the control unit which is capable to control 10 fixtures at a time.

Can you change out any of the led's in that setup? If so 6500k whites are possibly better. Closer to the suns color and easier to work with for looks since the blues in LED tend to be pretty potent.

If not I wouldn't worry too much about it though. I have a setup that is a lot like yours and everything is doing just fine. I just have to dim the blues to avoid the "windex look".

At last I finished the initial set up of the tank with plumbing etc. Now I started to fill RO/DI water in it.

The ATO unit and the sump with DIY electrical pannel.

A little update ;

- The first water started to flow in at the date 05/25.
- Added salt mix on 05/28 and let the salt melt inside the tank with the help of the tunze flowers.
- The live sand and the dry rocks 05/31
- Prodibio start up set had been used for additional bacteria 06/01
- Added two pieces of live rock 06/02
- Second batch of prodibio startup addition 06/06
- 12 pcs. conch addition 06/07 (still alive)

The tank is still cycling, but no diatom activities started yet. I believe the loss of good illumination is the biggest factor of this. We are working on a DIY 10x 24W T5 fixture with yeneryilmaz who had produced the tank and the furniture for me.

In a few days time we will complete the lighting fixture. I am planning to add two pieces of cleaner shripms before the fishes by this weekend.

Planned additions ;
- Biopellet reactor
- Lighting fixture

Looking forward to receive comments and advices from experienced friends

Current Tank Info: 105g AquaVim wedge, yellow tang, sailfin blenny,royal gramma, ocellaris clown pair, yellow watchman, 100 microceriths, 25 tiny hermits, a 4" conch, 1" nassarius, recovering from 2 year hiatus with daily water change of 10%.
