help understanding API ammonia test

I know API is not the best ever testing kit, but can you guys help me out? When I tst ammonia, it'll come up slightly green after 5-10 minutes. however, if I let it sit for about an hour, the color will turn to that murky yellow that I know to mean zero. so, which do I trust? Why would you use the readings after 10 minutes if they're still changing!? I'm confused...
