Wild vs Tank Bred
If you had a choice, say a species (invert or fish) is available both wild caught and tank bred, what would you choose, and why?

I would and do go tank bred for multiple reasons. The biggest reason, for me, is to not put any more additional strain on our oceans. All of my fish and corals are either tank bred or Aquacultured. I have also heard that fish tend to do better in a tank environment if they were born in a tank because it is easier to feed them.

I prefer tank bred for the same reasons mentioned above. Save the reefs so our grandchildren can enjoy them as much as we have.

I agree. They're easier to feed and adapt to home aquariums better. Not to mention they're hardier then wild caught. And one plus side - look at it as going green by saving the wild ones where they belong - in the wild blue sea. LOL!

tank raised tend to be less agressive more tolerant of confind spaces. There also cheaper in price a few reasons to buy them.

I agree with many of the reasons above, the other reasons I hadn't thought about.
I was just curious of what other people think about it... |

No reason to get wild caught, besides it will probably become illegal someday ( or so I hope ), tank bred, and propagated corals are always the way to go.

Tank bred would seem to have advantages. First, they are conditioned to aquarium life. Second, they probably do not have the potential parasite load that wild caught fish can have. Third, they will not have damage from inappropriate collection techniques. Fourth, they are not collected in a way that might damage reefs.
The only downside I can think of is possible inbreeding in domestic strains. Inbreeding can be a problem in pure bred dogs. I do not think it would be as much of a problem in fish. |

I completely agree with the sentiments of the thread and would also choose tank bred over wild caught but......

You are also going to need wild caught fish every now and agian to strengthen breeding lines and if there isn't a "value" to wild species, like the aquarium trade brings, there is less insentive for local people to maintain the reef. If you take away tourism, the biggest thing going for these areas is the trade in fish. Within this the fish would likely be over exploited and thats far worse. Not meaning to bring the thread down but i don't think it will ever be possible to have a tank bred vs wild choice. |

I meant where there is a choice. Unfortunately many species are wild caught only.
I do agree though that we must be careful with inbreeding. I don't see it as a major issue, not yet, but with a little care it will never be. |
