return pump blowing sand

any reason I shouldn't put holes in the plastic returns in my DT? I'm thinking this is a solution to having such a strong force blowing the sand and such..

sorry if my picture is the wrong orientation I can figure out how to rotate it..

What size pump do you have? How many gallons in the tank? How many returns?
