I had one set up a couple of years ago but not hooked into the tank. I was only using it for pods. But I don't see why it couldn't be integrated into the tank as well.

i wouldnt put sand in it. i had some rubble rock in there and really all i did was used old tank water after a water change and swappped out a gallon or so. dont think i would do that if it was integrated with the dt or sump. if therre is room you might be able to use gravity to feed it back to the sump and use a small maxijet to pump water in from the sump.

it's not possible to do that (gravity feed)
i would use an maxijet tp pump water from the sump in a plastic box and set up an return pipe from the box to the sump .
