Refugium advice.

So I'm trying to figure out how and where to work in a refugium into my system.
Do you think converting 80% of my sump to be a refugium to be extreme or would I need more. The sump is 100 gallons running total of 600 gallons.

Can I just let all the nasty algaes build up in there or should I outsource some type of special algae?

I assume 24/7 lighting be the optimum.
I also read somewhere low k rating?

I'm also trying to work in some type of biomedia like porcelean beads or bio balls. The owner of the store says the sand and live rock should be enough but I always feel the more there is the better. What are your thoughts?
