Lighting for 55 gallon will this work?

I just purchased a used coralife light:

I didn't realize it was discontinued, but everything works on it, although it gets pretty hot. Is this a good startup light? I plan on adding corals at some point in the future and want to know if this will do the job.

It should work fine for hardy corals. As long as the tank isn't too deep.

There are 18-20 inches of water in the tank, and the light will be about 6 inches above the water surface.

I had a 30g setup that is probably as high as that. I used a Oddysea Dual T5HO 1 10000k and 1 Actinic and my corals are fine. Even my Alveopora that I was told would be hard to keep is flourishing under it. I would say your good.

Good to know, I've gotta replace the bulbs, since they look pretty old. But I'm glad I picked it up. I dunno if 150 was a good price though...

I have learned in this hobby that prices on things are bone crushers. For instance, you can get the same fish from 2 different stores and pay a world of difference in price. As for the lighting, yeah, maybe you paid too much but it will work. My 48" Quad T5HO 2 10000k and 2 Actinic with built in cooling fans and a built in timer with 8 lunar LEDs ran me $117.

Yeah that is what I figured, but for another 100 bucks I got a freshwater 55 gallon setup and stand as well, and he didn't want to piece it out. Sucks I paid too much, especially now that I'm looking at bulb prices... But those can wait until I actually start to put some corals in the tank.
