Oceanic Tech 120g plumping help
I'm on process of setting up my tank and now come to the plumping part. The Tech series has center overflow 4"x16" with 4 holes (1.5" for 1" bulkhead). The original design that I got is: 2 each of 1" drain and 2 each of 3/4" return. I bought a Sicce 5.0 pump rating up to 1300GPH. Which option should I choose?
1/ 2 each 1" drain and 2 each 3/4" return. 2/ 2 each of 1" drain and 2 each 1/2" return. 3/ 2 each of 1" drain to Sump, 1 each of 3/4" drain to Refugium and 1 each of 3/4" return. 4/ 2 each of 1" drain and 2 each 3/4" return but one of the return T of to the Refugium. 5/ 2 each 1" drain and 2 each 3/4" return. place a small pump from the return compartment to pump water to the refugium. |

How high is your pump going to lift the water?
Also you might want to look into (search on RC) a Herbie Drain system (its way more silent then others). |

Hey i have the same tank i just got used. Awesome tank! Is the stock overflow pipes a Durso?
Anyway i have it how it was from the previous owner.. 2x 1.5" flexible tube drains 2x 3/4" I.D. flexible tubing returns powered by a mag 9.5 for now. I do plan to change from most of the flexible tubing to hard pvc... |

I would do 2x 3/4" returns and 1" drains.
is your refugium part of the sump or separate? |

I would use 2 x 1" drains for a Heribe drain and the other 2 bulkheads for returns. Put a ball or gate valve on the Sicce as well. I know it's adjustable but I think you will benefit from the added control.

That's just the style of bulkheads it has. 2X bulkhead with 3/4" barb fitting and 2X bulkhead with a 1.5" barb fitting ... I will eventually re-do the overflow bulkheads and return pipes when I move the tank in 2 months since that will be the time to do it... what's the cut out gold size for the bulkheads on this tank? |

I know they are a tad more $ but I highly recommend a gate valve for the full siphon drain on the Heribe. You do not need a valve on the emergency drain. The return line valve can be a ball valve as it does not need to be as accurate.
Bulk reef supply sells some nice gate valves if you can't find one locally.

Go to your local Ace hardware store. They make reducing couplers.
Why go with all hard PVC? Each time you put a right angle, valve, union, etc. in line, you essentially add a "foot" to the length of your set up. They make a flexible PVC pipe ranging from 1 to 3 inches. It's made for pond and swimming pool applications, and is fish safe. Flexibility allows for gentler changes in direction causing less head pressure. Last edited by Twistofer; 07/10/2013 at 07:16 PM. |
